※記念すべき初版本。ホジスン夫人の弟であるGilbert K.Farnworth氏に献辞が捧げられているのは、夫人が勤めていた出版社から出版されていた「London Magazine」にこのシリーズが掲載されていたことと関係があるのだろう。
また、他のバージョンとは違い、詩が二編収録されている。

解説

　船長であり、密輸業者でもあるゴールト船長を主役とした、ピカレスク的なシリーズ。個人的なログという形式をとっている。ホジスン晩年の重要作だが、ほとんど知られていない。
　邦訳のある「悪党見本市」に収められている、エラリー・クイーンによる解説でも

「ゴールト船長は『悪党見本市』に載る資格が立派にある。彼はホジスンの小説の愛好者の大部分にとってさえ目新しいのだから、大部分の読者にとって目新しいことはまちがいない」

　と述べられているくらいである。クイーンは結構ホジスンと「ゴールト船長」を高く評価しているようだが、初版以降、ほとんど再刊されていない作品である。ただし、オンライン上でいくつかの作品は読むことができる。
　ところが、 それほどマイナーな「ゴールト船長」にも関わらず、アメリカの人気ドラマ「LOST」の第4シーズンに登場するCaptain Gaultは、このホジスンの作品から名前を取っているという。近年、「パイレーツ・オブ・カリビアン」のヒットの煽りを受けて、ホジスンにも多少注目が集まったようだから、その流れの延長線上なのかもしれない。
